A food bank website built on the grocery receipt

A food bank site where gifts print as itemized receipts and volunteer shifts print as tickets.

Commons Pantry is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a food bank site can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

Commons Pantry is a made-up neighborhood food bank in Pomona: a choice pantry open four days a week, with home delivery, a Saturday hot meal and help applying for CalFresh.

A food bank site serves three people at once: someone who needs groceries today, a volunteer looking for a shift, and a donor wondering where the money goes. Each needs a straight answer in one tap.

The idea

The grocery receipt

A food bank runs on groceries, so the site prints like a till. The week’s numbers come out as a receipt (“paid by families: $0.00”), every gift is itemized line by line, and a volunteer shift prints as a ticket with a stub. Design decisions

Three doors, one tap each

Get food, Volunteer and Give sit side by side near the top, each in its own color, so nobody reads past the wrong one to find theirs.

Open now, in Pomona time

The hours show whether the pantry is open right now and when it opens next, worked out in Pacific time, with today’s card lit.

Itemize the gift

Pick an amount and the receipt shows bags of produce, weeks of staples, packs of diapers and hot meals, with the rest marked for the lights and the cold room. No vague “meals provided.”

Dignity first

The get-food page says no ID, no proof of income, no appointment, and walks the first visit in three steps.

What’s built

  • Donation receipt that itemizes any amount, once or monthly
  • Volunteer shift picker with role filters, full shifts and a printed ticket
  • Open-now status and hours in Pacific time
  • First-visit steps, home delivery sign-up and CalFresh help
  • Most-needed food list for drop-offs

Pages to try

Everything works in the browser. Forms and checkout don’t send anything.
