A landscaping website where every plant comes with a nursery tag

A low-water garden company site built on nursery plant tags, with a yard planner that prices the job, the rebate and the water saved.

One Drop Landscapes is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a landscaping site can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

One Drop Landscapes is a made-up company in Culver City that replaces lawns with low-water gardens on the Westside: design, planting, drip irrigation and care.

Homeowners thinking about pulling their lawn want to know what it costs, what the rebate covers, how much water it saves and what the yard will look like after. Most landscaper sites show a gallery and a contact form.

The idea

The nursery plant tag

Every plant on the site is a tag on a stake: photo, name, a sun icon, one to three water drops and the size it grows to, with a punched hole at the top. One drop means low water, which is where the name comes from. The tags stand in a strip of soil on the home page, and the yard planner’s result is one giant tag. White, deep green-black, nursery-tag lime and drip blue; Epilogue with Albert Sans.

Design decisions

Price the whole yard up front

The yard planner takes lawn size, sun, style and extras and returns a price range, the rebate, the price after it and the gallons saved a year, using the Metropolitan Water District’s estimate of 42 gallons per square foot.

Plants you can read from the sidewalk

Every tag says the same three things in the same place, and the stake color gives the water need: lime for one drop, blue for two. The plant library filters by sun, low water and California natives.

Rebate first, digging second

Water agencies set their own rebates, and most want to approve a yard before the lawn comes out. So the planner asks for your agency’s rate instead of guessing, and the process puts the paperwork before the planting.
