A wine shop where every bottle comes with a shelf talker

A neighborhood wine shop with a staff note on every bottle and a taste map that finds wine you’ll like.

Shelf Talk is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a wine shop store can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

Shelf Talk is a made-up neighborhood wine shop in Highland Park with ten bottles on the counter and a three-bottle monthly club.

Most people don’t know grape names. In a shop they ask the person behind the counter; online they guess from a label.

The idea

The shelf talker

A shelf talker is the little card a shop clips under a bottle with a staff note. Every wine gets one in highlighter yellow with a handwritten line and three quick facts, the grid sits on a black shelf rail, and a taste map pins every bottle from light to full and fruity to earthy. Black, white and highlighter yellow; Familjen Grotesk and Inter Tight, with Caveat only for the staff notes.

Design decisions

Point at a feeling

Tap a spot on the taste map, or start from a wine you already like, and the shop pulls the three closest bottles.

Sell dinner, not grapes

“What’s for dinner?” sorts the shelf by what you’re cooking.

Our own labels

Regions are real places, but the producers are made up and the bottles are drawn, so no real winery’s label appears.

What’s built

  • Taste map that finds the three closest bottles
  • Staff-note shelf talkers on every wine
  • Food pairing shortcuts
  • Three-bottle monthly club
  • Bag and demo checkout that sends nothing

Pages to try

Everything works in the browser. Forms and checkout don’t send anything.
