Etsy keyword research means finding the words shoppers type into Etsy's search and putting them where Etsy looks: your title, tags, category and attributes. Here's a simple process for beginners.
The rules to know
- Tags: each listing can have up to 13 tags, and each tag can be up to 20 characters. Etsy's Seller Handbook recommends using all 13.
- Titles: up to 140 characters. Etsy advises keeping them clear and readable, with the most important words first, rather than stuffing in every keyword.
- Categories and attributes (color, material, occasion and so on) also help your listing match searches, so fill them in. You don't need to repeat them as tags.
- Multi-word tags like "personalized dog tag" usually work better than single words.
Step 1: brainstorm like a shopper
Write down how a buyer would describe your item: what it is, what it's made of, its style, who it's for and what occasion it suits. "Gift for dad" and "wedding guest dress" are the kinds of phrases shoppers type.
Step 2: use Etsy's search bar
Type the start of your phrases into Etsy's search box and note the suggestions. They come from real searches, so they show the wording buyers actually use.
Step 3: see what successful listings use
Look at best-selling listings for items like yours. Etsy doesn't display their tags on the page, but Etsy Keyword Extractor pulls the tags from any listing you open, so you can see which phrases they target and spot gaps. Use them for ideas, not to copy wholesale.
Step 4: check your own stats
Once your listings get visits, Etsy's Stats in Shop Manager show the search terms shoppers used to find you. Those are your best keywords: add more of them to listings that fit, and drop tags that never bring visits.
Step 5: write your tags and title
- Fill all 13 tags with different phrases, each under 20 characters.
- Mix broad phrases ("ceramic mug") with specific ones ("speckled ceramic mug").
- Put the clearest description of the item at the start of the title.
The free Etsy tags tool turns a list of ideas into 13 clean tags, trimmed to the 20-character limit, ready to paste.
Step 6: review and adjust
Search rankings take time to settle. Check your stats after a few weeks, change a few tags at a time, and keep notes on what helped. Free and paid tools such as eRank can add estimated search data once you're comfortable with the basics.
