Shopify's free themes are well built, fast and supported by Shopify itself, which makes them a good starting point for most new stores. Here are ten worth knowing, and how to find out which theme a store you admire is using.
Ten free Shopify themes
- Dawn: clean and minimal, and the reference design many of Shopify's free themes were built from.
- Horizon: part of the newer family of free themes Shopify introduced in 2025, with flexible blocks you can nest and rearrange.
- Refresh: bright and energetic.
- Sense: soft and calm, often used for beauty and wellness.
- Craft: warm and textured, suited to handmade goods.
- Studio: made to show off art and creative work.
- Taste: designed for food and drink brands.
- Crave: bolder, playful food and drink styling.
- Ride: big imagery for sports and outdoor gear.
- Colorblock: bold blocks of color for brands that want to stand out.
Shopify updates its free theme list, so check the Theme Store for the current set. All of them support Online Store 2.0 features such as sections on every page. See 2.0 vs vintage themes.
How to tell which theme a store uses
1. Use an extension
Shopify Theme Detector shows the theme name and the apps it finds on any Shopify store, in one click.
2. Check the page source
Right-click the page → View page source, then press Ctrl + F and search for Shopify.theme. You'll see the theme's name, and usually a schema_name that gives the original theme.
3. Watch out for renamed themes
Store owners can rename their theme, so the name may say "Main theme" or "Summer 2026". The schema_name in the source usually still shows the original, such as Dawn. If neither looks familiar, it's probably a paid or custom theme.
Choosing a theme
- Pick for your product and catalog size first, looks second; colors and fonts are easy to change.
- Try a theme with your own products and photos before deciding.
- Check mobile layout and speed. See checking a Shopify store's speed.
- Study stores using the theme you're considering to see what it can look like.
