AI answers now appear at the top of many Google searches, and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini directly. For small websites, which often rely on search for most of their visitors, that's changing how much traffic arrives and from where.

What the data shows

A Pew Research Center analysis published in July 2025 found that when a Google search showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result in about 8% of visits, compared with about 15% when there was no summary. SEO firms' studies have also found lower click-through rates for top-ranking pages when an AI Overview appears.

Which pages lose most

  • Simple answers: definitions, quick facts, conversions and "what is" questions.
  • General how-tos that an AI summary can condense into steps.
  • Lists that repeat what's everywhere else.

Which pages hold up

  • Tools and calculators people need to use, not just read about.
  • Local businesses people want to visit or call.
  • Original experience: real reviews, case studies and opinions.
  • Detailed guides for complex tasks.
  • Products and services people buy.

How to measure the change

  1. In Google Search Console, compare impressions and clicks for the same pages year over year. Rising impressions with falling clicks often point to AI answers.
  2. In Google Analytics, look at referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
  3. Search your main queries and note whether an AI Overview appears, and whether you're cited in it.

Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview clicks from normal results, so this takes some manual checking.

Don't panic over one month

Traffic moves with seasons, Google updates and competitors, not just AI. Look at trends over several months and compare like with like, such as the same pages in the same month last year, before deciding AI answers are the cause.

What small sites can do

  • Focus on what summaries can't replace: tools, experience, local detail and specialist depth.
  • Write clear, well-structured answers that AI tools can cite.
  • Build direct audiences through email lists and communities.
  • Show who's behind the site and why you know what you're talking about.
