How to Detect Custom vs Off-the-Shelf Shopify Themes

Many Shopify stores that look custom are built on a theme anyone can buy or download, renamed and restyled. Others really are custom-built. Telling them apart shows how much a store invested and which theme you could start from.

1. Check the theme name

Shopify Theme Detector shows the name the store's theme reports. Store owners can rename their theme in the admin, so a name like "Brand 2026 Final" doesn't tell you what it was built from. That's where the page source helps.

2. Read the theme details in the source

1. Open the store and press Ctrl + U to view the source.
2. Search (Ctrl + F) for Shopify.theme.
3. Look at the details listed with it:
   • name: the store's chosen name, which can be anything.
   • schema_name: on most modern themes, the original theme's name, such as Dawn, even after renaming.
   • theme_store_id: a number for themes from the Shopify Theme Store; empty for themes uploaded from elsewhere.

A recognizable schema_name with a Theme Store ID means an off-the-shelf theme. An empty ID and an unfamiliar or missing schema name points to a custom theme, or one bought outside the Theme Store.

3. Look for file and code clues

• File names: stylesheet and script names in the source often match a known theme's files.
• Section names: class names and section IDs often follow a theme's naming pattern.
• Theme comments: some themes leave a comment with their name and version.

4. Compare the design with demos

Once you suspect a theme, open its demo store from the Theme Store. Compare the header layout, product page structure, cart drawer and footer. Colors and fonts change easily; the layout and how things move usually don't. See popular free themes and how to spot them.

Signs of a truly custom theme

• Layouts and interactions that don't match any theme demo.
• Unique section types and animations throughout.
• No Theme Store ID and no known schema name.
• A large brand with an in-house team or agency.

Why it matters

• Budget: a polished off-the-shelf theme with good photos can match a custom build for much less.
• Speed to launch: starting from a theme takes weeks, not months.
• Learning: knowing the base theme tells you exactly what you'd start with.
