Trending products can launch a Shopify store quickly, but many trends fade before your first order ships. The goal is to spot rising demand early and check it's worth selling before you spend money on stock or ads.

Where to spot trends

  • Google Trends: compare search interest over five years to see whether a product is growing steadily, spiking or seasonal.
  • TikTok Creative Center: shows trending hashtags, songs and top-performing products in ads.
  • Amazon Best Sellers and Movers & Shakers: what's selling now and what's rising fastest in each category.
  • Pinterest Trends: rising searches, often weeks ahead for home, fashion and gifts.
  • Etsy's search bar: suggestions show what shoppers are typing for handmade and niche products.
  • Reddit and niche communities: recurring "where can I buy" and "I wish someone made" posts.

Trend or fad?

  • Lasting trend: steady growth over months or years, interest from several sources, and solves a real problem.
  • Fad: a sharp spike from one viral video, already falling, with dozens of identical sellers.
  • Seasonal: rises and falls at the same time every year. Plan stock around it.

Check it's worth selling

  1. Margin: after product cost, shipping, payment fees, returns and ads, is there profit left?
  2. Shipping: small, light and unbreakable products are cheaper to ship and return.
  3. Competition: can you offer something better: quality, bundles, a niche audience or a stronger brand?
  4. Rules: supplements, cosmetics, children's products and electronics can need safety testing or certification.
  5. Supply: can your supplier keep up, with consistent quality?

Study who's already selling

Look at stores selling the product successfully. Shopify Theme Detector shows their theme and the popular apps they use, such as reviews and upsells. See finding stores in your niche and telling dropshippers from real brands.

Test before you commit

  • Order samples and check quality yourself.
  • Start with a small batch or a preorder page.
  • Run a small ad test to see whether people click and buy.
  • Collect reviews early.

Build beyond the trend

The stores that last turn a trending product into a brand: original photos, helpful content, good service and related products for repeat customers. See choosing an ecommerce platform.
