Ads, pop-ups, sidebars, auto-playing videos and "recommended" boxes all compete for attention on a typical web page. For anyone who's easily distracted, including many people with ADHD, they make reading much harder. You can remove most of them.
1. Use Reading mode
Right-click a page → Open in reading mode. The side panel shows only the article text, in the font, size and colors you choose. It can also read the page aloud.
2. Block ads and pop-ups
- An ad and tracker blocker removes most ads, banners and auto-playing video ads.
- Chrome blocks pop-up windows by default; check Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Pop-ups and redirects.
- Block notification requests in the same settings, under Notifications.
3. Remove cookie banners
Cookie Auto-Reject clicks "Reject all" on many cookie banners as they appear, so they're gone before you start reading.
4. Clean up Google
Search results pages are full of boxes. Search Cleaner hides the ones you choose, such as AI Overviews, People Also Ask and video carousels. See search results clutter.
5. Show less at once
ADHD Reading Focus shows one paragraph at a time in larger text, with everything else hidden, and remembers your place. See paragraph vs line focus.
6. Tidy the browser itself
- Hide the bookmarks bar with
Ctrl+Shift+B. - Press
F11for full screen while reading. - Close tabs you don't need, or collapse them into tab groups.
- Pick a calm Chrome theme without busy images.
7. Stop motion
- Turn on reduced motion in your system settings; many sites tone down animations.
- Turn off autoplay in video sites' settings, such as YouTube's autoplay switch.
8. Use site settings
Many sites have their own focus or reader views, compact layouts or options to hide recommendations. Check the settings of the sites you use daily.
9. Mute what moves on the page
Right-click a tab → Mute site to silence a site that plays sound on its own. Chrome remembers the choice for that site.
Start small
Pick the two or three changes that remove what bothers you most, and add more if needed. For more focus setups, see a focus environment for deep work and reading mode extensions.
