A shopper who reaches checkout has already decided to buy. Losing them there is the most expensive kind of lost sale. The best Shopify stores remove every reason to hesitate.

Show the full cost early

Baymard Institute's long-running checkout surveys consistently find that unexpected extra costs, such as shipping, taxes and fees, are the most common reason people abandon a purchase. Strong stores show shipping costs or free shipping thresholds on product pages and in the cart, not for the first time at payment.

Offer express payment

Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal let returning shoppers pay without typing card and address details. Shopify's checkout shows these buttons at the top. Top stores keep them prominent and test them on phones.

Allow guest checkout

Forcing people to create an account before buying adds friction. Offer account creation after the purchase, when the shopper has a reason to say yes.

Keep it focused

  • Shopify's checkout removes your store's navigation, so shoppers aren't pulled away.
  • Add only upsells that genuinely help, such as a matching accessory, and keep them easy to skip.
  • Ask only for the information you need.

Build trust at the last step

  • Clear returns and delivery information, linked from checkout.
  • Recognizable payment options.
  • Contact details or live chat for last-minute questions.
  • Reviews on product and cart pages, before checkout begins.

Customize carefully

Shopify replaced its old checkout.liquid customization with Checkout Extensibility, which uses apps and approved extensions instead of editing the checkout code directly. That keeps checkout fast and secure, and means most customizations now come from apps.

Recover abandoned checkouts

Shopify can email shoppers who started checkout but didn't finish. A short, helpful reminder, sometimes with an answer to a likely question about shipping or sizing, works better than an immediate discount.

Study what other stores do

Go through a competitor's cart and checkout as a shopper, up to the payment step. Shopify Theme Detector shows the store's theme and the popular apps it recognizes, including upsell, buy-now-pay-later and subscription apps, so you can see how their cart and checkout extras are built. See analyzing a competitor's conversion strategy.

Measure

Shopify Analytics shows how many sessions reach checkout and how many complete it. Change one thing at a time and watch the completion rate.
