Shopify Theme Customization Limits: What You Can and Cannot Change

Shopify themes are flexible, but not unlimited. Knowing where the limits are saves time and stops you paying for changes that aren't possible, or aren't worth it.
What you can change without code
Modern Online Store 2.0 themes let you do a lot in the theme editor:
- Add, remove, and reorder sections on most pages, not just the homepage.
- Change colors, fonts, spacing, and logos in theme settings.
- Create different templates for different products, collections, or pages.
- Add app blocks from compatible apps without touching code.
What needs code
- New section types or layouts the theme doesn't include: custom Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in the theme files.
- Small tweaks using the "Custom Liquid" section, or a theme's custom CSS field, which many themes include.
- Logic changes, like showing content based on tags or metafields.
Always duplicate the theme before editing code, and keep notes. Heavy edits make theme updates harder, because the new version won't include your changes.
What you can't change in the theme
- Checkout: checkout isn't part of your theme. Shopify has moved checkout customization to Checkout Extensibility, with checkout.liquid retired, so changes are made with the checkout editor, apps, and extensions, and many deeper options require Shopify Plus.
- Core platform behavior, like how accounts, cart logic, or discounts work, changes through Shopify settings, apps, or Shopify Functions, not theme code.
- URL structure, like /products/ and /collections/, is fixed.
Before you customize
- Check whether your theme, or a better-suited theme, already does it. Shopify Theme Detector shows which theme and apps any store you admire is using.
- Look for an app that does it without code.
- Only then plan custom code.
