Chrome has strong accessibility features built in, and extensions fill the gaps. This list is for people using the web, not testing it. For developer tools, see accessibility testing extensions.

Built into Chrome first

  • Reading mode (right-click → Open in reading mode): clean text with your choice of font, size, spacing and colors, plus Read aloud with word highlighting.
  • Live Caption: Settings → Accessibility → Live Caption adds captions to audio and video playing in Chrome.
  • Font size and page zoom: Settings → Appearance.
  • Caret browsing: press F7 to move through pages with a text cursor, like a document.

Reading and focus

  • ADHD Reading Focus shows one paragraph at a time, with adjustable text size, and remembers your place. Helpful for ADHD, dyslexia and anyone who loses their place.
  • Reading Progress Bar shows how far through a page you are.
  • Tools such as Helperbird and Read&Write add dyslexia-friendly fonts, overlays, dictionaries and text-to-speech.

Vision and comfort

Keyboard and voice

  • Keyboard-navigation extensions such as Vimium let you click links and scroll without a mouse.
  • Windows Voice Access and Mac Voice Control let you control Chrome by voice.
  • Screen readers: NVDA is free on Windows, VoiceOver is built into Macs, and ChromeVox into Chromebooks.

Fewer interruptions

  • Cookie Auto-Reject answers cookie banners automatically, which helps anyone for whom pop-ups are hard to find or close.
  • Turn off site notifications in Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.

Captions and audio

  • YouTube and most video sites have their own caption settings, where you can change caption size, color and background.
  • Chrome's Live Caption also works on podcasts and video calls in the browser, and the captions stay on your device.
  • For a single tab that's too quiet or too loud, volume extensions can boost or lower it without changing your system volume.

Choosing well

  • Try one tool at a time, for a week.
  • Check that extensions don't clash with your screen reader or magnifier.
  • Prefer tools that keep your data in the browser.
