The right extensions can take some of the effort out of focusing online: fewer distractions on the page, less temptation to wander, and help staying with long text. Start with one or two that target your biggest problem, rather than installing ten at once.
Reading and staying with text
- ADHD Reading Focus shows one paragraph at a time, moved with the arrow keys, with adjustable text size, and remembers your place on each page.
- Reading Progress Bar adds a slim bar showing how far through a page you are.
- Chrome's built-in Reading mode strips pages down and can read them aloud with word highlighting.
Blocking distractions
- Site blockers such as LeechBlock NG or BlockSite block or limit distracting sites during the hours you set.
- Feed blockers such as News Feed Eradicator hide social media feeds while keeping messages and posting.
- Unhook hides YouTube's recommendations, comments and Shorts, so you watch what you came for.
Taming tabs
- Patrick Bushe's Tab Manager puts idle tabs to sleep, searches open tabs and saves sessions for later.
- Chrome's tab groups and tab search (
Ctrl + Shift + A) help too. See Chrome settings for tab overload.
Calmer pages
- Cookie Auto-Reject answers cookie banners for you, one fewer pop-up on every new site.
- Search Cleaner hides Google's extra boxes, such as AI Overviews and People Also Ask, so search results are shorter and less tempting to wander through.
- Modern Dark Mode softens bright pages, which some people find less overwhelming, especially in the evening.
Remembering things
Sticky Notes Anywhere leaves a note on the page you need to come back to, so the reminder is where you'll see it.
Choosing well
- One problem at a time: add a tool, use it for a week, then decide.
- Make the block hard to undo during focus hours, or it's too easy to switch off.
- Check permissions: reading tools need page access; prefer ones that keep data in your browser.
- Remove what you stop using.
