Choosing a category on Etsy feels like admin, but it affects how your listing is found. Etsy uses your category and attributes to decide which searches and filters your item appears in.

Why category matters

  • Categories act like extra tags. Etsy has said category and attribute words count toward matching searches, so you don't need to repeat them in your tags.
  • Filters depend on them. Shoppers narrowing by category, color, material, or occasion only see listings that set those.
  • The wrong category hides you. An item filed somewhere unexpected won't appear when shoppers filter.

Pick the most specific category

  1. Start typing what the item is and choose the deepest, most specific category that fits. "Necklaces, Pendants" beats "Jewelry".
  2. If two categories fit, pick the one where shoppers would most likely look for your item, not the one with fewer competitors.
  3. Fill in every relevant attribute Etsy offers for that category: color, material, occasion, style, and so on.

Check what works for others

Search for your product the way a buyer would and open the top listings. Note which categories and attributes they use. Their tags show the keywords they're targeting; Etsy Keyword Extractor shows all 13 tags on any listing and exports them.

Use your tags wisely

Since category and attributes already cover broad terms, spend your 13 tags on specific, multi-word phrases buyers actually type. Long-tail Etsy keywords explains how to find them.

Revisit when things change

Etsy adds and renames categories from time to time. If a listing's views drop, check that its category still fits best, and look at your shop stats to see which searches bring buyers in.
