Etsy Promoted Listings vs Organic SEO: Where to Invest Your Money

Etsy sellers can pay for visibility with Etsy Ads, which used to be called Promoted Listings, or earn it with better listings. Most shops do best with strong organic listings first and ads added carefully on what already sells.
How Etsy Ads work
- You set a daily budget, from $1 a day.
- Your listings appear in Etsy search results and other places on Etsy, marked as ads.
- You pay when a shopper clicks.
- The Etsy Ads dashboard shows views, clicks, orders, revenue and spend for each listing.
Offsite Ads are different
Etsy also advertises listings on other sites, such as Google and social media. You pay a fee only when a sale comes from one of those ads: 15% of the order for shops under $10,000 in yearly sales, which can opt out, and 12% for larger shops, which can't. Check Etsy's current fee pages, since rates change.
Why organic comes first
Ads send shoppers to your listing; the listing has to convince them. If a listing gets views but no sales organically, ads will mostly buy more views that don't sell. Fix these first:
- Photos, especially the first one.
- Titles and tags that match what buyers search. See long-tail keyword strategy.
- Price and shipping compared with similar listings.
- Reviews and clear descriptions.
Etsy Keyword Extractor shows every tag on competitors' listings, with Copy All and CSV download, to help with the second point.
Work out your break-even return
Return on ad spend (ROAS) is revenue from ads divided by ad spend. Your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your profit margin before ad costs:
- 40% margin: break-even ROAS of 2.5. Every $1 of ads must bring $2.50 in sales just to break even.
- 25% margin: break-even ROAS of 4.
Use the ROAS calculator to check your numbers.
When ads make sense
- Listings that already sell organically and have good reviews.
- New listings that need early views to start collecting sales and reviews.
- Busy seasons, when buyers are actively shopping.
How to run them sensibly
- Start with a small daily budget on your best listings.
- Run for at least two weeks before judging.
- Turn off ads on listings that get clicks but no sales.
- Compare ROAS with your break-even number every month.
