How Product Photography Affects Etsy Search Ranking

Etsy's search doesn't rank listings by how good their photos look. But photos have a big indirect effect, because Etsy pays close attention to how shoppers respond to a listing, and the first photo is what shoppers respond to.

How photos feed into ranking

Etsy's Seller Handbook describes several ranking factors. Relevancy comes from titles, tags, categories and attributes. Listing quality comes from how shoppers interact: clicks, favorites and purchases. A listing that gets clicked and bought more often tends to rank better over time.

Your first photo is the thumbnail in search results, so it largely decides whether anyone clicks. The rest of the photos help decide whether they buy.

What makes a strong first photo

  • The product is obvious at thumbnail size on a phone.
  • Clean, uncluttered background that doesn't compete with the product.
  • Natural or soft light, with accurate color.
  • Consistent style across your shop, so shoppers recognize your listings.
  • Framed for the crop: check how it looks in Etsy's square-ish thumbnail.

Which shots to include

  • The product from several angles.
  • Close-ups of texture, details and materials.
  • Scale: in someone's hand, worn, or next to a familiar object.
  • In use or in a styled setting.
  • Variations, such as colors or sizes.
  • Packaging, if it's part of the appeal, such as for gifts.
  • A short video, which Etsy supports on listings.

Image quality

Use high-resolution images so shoppers can zoom in. Etsy's photo guidance recommends large images, about 2,000 pixels on the shortest side.

Common mistakes

  • Dark or yellow-tinted photos.
  • Busy backgrounds or props that hide the product.
  • Edited colors that don't match what arrives, which leads to returns and bad reviews.
  • Text overlays that are hard to read on a phone.
  • Only one photo.

Test and measure

Etsy's shop stats show views and visits per listing. Change the first photo on a listing with plenty of views but few sales, then compare over a few weeks.

Photos and keywords work together

Great photos won't help if the listing doesn't show up. Etsy Keyword Extractor lists the tags on any listing, so you can see which phrases successful sellers use. See a 15-minute Etsy SEO audit and tags vs titles.
