Most successful Shopify stores keep fonts simple: one or two families, chosen to match the brand and stay readable on phones, where most shopping happens. Here are the patterns that work, and how to see exactly what any store uses.

How fonts work in Shopify

Most Shopify themes let you pick a heading font and a body font under Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Typography. The picker uses Shopify's font library, which includes system fonts, many Google Fonts and some licensed fonts, all served from Shopify's own servers. Custom fonts, such as a brand's own typeface, need to be added to the theme files with a proper web license.

Common patterns by brand style

  • Clean and modern: one sans-serif for everything, with bold weights for headings. Fonts like Inter, Work Sans or the theme's default. Popular with tech, home goods and many direct-to-consumer brands.
  • Premium or beauty: an elegant serif for headings, such as Playfair Display or Cormorant, with a simple sans-serif for body text and prices.
  • Bold and playful: a heavy display font for headings, used sparingly, with a neutral body font. Common for food, drinks and apparel.
  • Classic and trustworthy: a readable serif such as Lora or Libre Baskerville for headings, with a sans body. Suits books, stationery and craft brands.

Why simple wins

  • Readability on phones: product descriptions, prices and buttons must be clear at small sizes.
  • Speed: every font and weight is another file to download. Two families with three or four weights is plenty.
  • Consistency: the same fonts on the store, emails and packaging make a brand recognizable.

See what a store uses

The fastest way to learn is to look at stores you admire:

  • Font Detector shows the font family, size, weight and color of any text you click, so you can see the heading and body fonts, and the sizes they use.
  • Shopify Theme Detector shows which theme and apps a store runs, so you can tell whether its look comes from a theme you could use.

Many big brands use custom or licensed fonts. If a font isn't in Shopify's library, look for a similar free alternative on Google Fonts.

Quick checklist

  • Body text at least 16 pixels on mobile.
  • Enough contrast for prices and buttons. Test with the contrast checker.
  • Headings and body clearly different, but from compatible families.
