A ramen restaurant website where you order from a ticket machine

A 14-seat ramen counter’s site: order from a ticket machine, see the wait, join the line from your phone.

Shokken Ramen is a made-up brand. I designed and built it to show what a restaurant site can look like; the people, prices, results and reviews on it are samples.

The brief

Shokken is a made-up 14-seat ramen counter on Sawtelle.

Small, busy restaurants lose people to the line outside. Guests want to see the menu, know how long the wait is, order pickup, and book the whole counter for a party, without calling a kitchen that’s too busy to answer.

The idea

The ticket machine (食券)

In Japan you order ramen at a machine. Here the menu is a steel machine with chunky lit buttons that press down, every order prints a paper ticket in the color a real machine uses, the waitlist hands you a numbered stub, sold-out bowls get a red 売切 lamp, and a red noren curtain hangs over the footer. Design decisions

The menu is the order form

Pressing a button on the machine drops a ticket into the tray, and the tray becomes the pickup order.

An honest wait

A “wait right now” card estimates the wait from how busy the counter usually is at this hour, with a bar for every hour of the day.

Allergies in plain view

Every bowl lists what it contains, and the allergy note says plainly what the kitchen can’t do. It’s all on the menu page, not in a PDF.

What’s built

  • Ticket-machine menu with pickup ordering
  • Join the line online and get a numbered stub
  • Wait estimate by the hour
  • What’s in each bowl, with allergens listed
  • Private events and catering quote form
  • Hours, getting there and house rules

Pages to try

Everything works in the browser. Forms and checkout don’t send anything.
